The Unrecognizable Glow Up: How to Become the Version of You Nobody Saw Coming

New hair is cute. New standards, new decisions and a completely different life? That’s the glow up.

unrecognizable glow up

Hi Dream Girl,

There are glow ups where you change your hair.

There are glow ups where you finally figure out your makeup, upgrade your wardrobe, start drinking enough water, and discover the exact blush placement that makes you look suspiciously expensive.

Love those for us. 💗

But then there is another kind.

The kind where someone who hasn’t seen you in six months needs a minute.

Not because you suddenly look like a completely different person.

Because you move like one.

You make decisions differently.

You tolerate different things.

You recover faster.

You stop asking permission for things you already know you want.

You actually do the things you used to keep announcing you were about to do.

Your life starts looking different because you became different inside it.

THE AHA

Your life starts looking different because you became different inside it.

That is the unrecognizable glow up.

And unfortunately, Sephora cannot do this one for us. 😂

The Best Glow Ups Start Where Nobody Can See Them

Pinterest can give you the hair.

TikTok can give you the morning routine.

Sephora can absolutely handle the face card.

But none of those things automatically change the woman making the decisions underneath all of it.

You can buy the matching Pilates set and still abandon yourself every time something gets uncomfortable.

You can build the prettiest vision board anyone has ever seen and still spend another year making decisions that belong to the life you said you wanted to leave.

The insight

Your real glow up isn’t built from aesthetics. It’s built from evidence.

Because your real glow up isn’t built from aesthetics.

It’s built from evidence.

Evidence of what you tolerate.

Evidence of what you believe you deserve.

Evidence of what happens after you make yourself a promise.

Evidence of what you do when nobody is watching.

Evidence of whether your future keeps losing arguments to whatever feels easiest today.

So if you want to become unrecognizable, I wouldn’t start with:

How can I look completely different?

I’d start with:

What would have to change for my current life to become completely unrecognizable?

Now we’re getting somewhere. 💗

1. Fire Your Old Self From Making Certain Decisions

Listen.

Your old self does not need to be publicly humiliated. 😂

She got you here.

She protected you in ways you probably didn’t even understand at the time.

She made the best decisions she knew how to make with the beliefs, fear, evidence, and environment she had.

But that does not mean she gets lifetime voting rights.

Your old self might prefer:

Snoozing the alarm.

Avoiding the conversation.

Waiting until she feels confident.

Buying planner number seven because apparently this one has finally cracked the code. 😭

Staying somewhere familiar because leaving would require becoming someone she hasn’t met yet.

Starting over every Monday.

Keeping the dream safely theoretical.

At some point, an unrecognizable glow up requires deciding:

Some choices are no longer available to me.

Not because you’re punishing yourself.

Because you have finally noticed what those choices keep producing.

There are decisions that create the life you say you want.

And there are decisions that keep renewing the life you’re trying to cancel for another season.

Your job is to figure out which is which.

Ask yourself:

What decision do I keep making that produces the exact version of my life I say I’m ready to leave?

“What decision do I keep making that produces the exact version of my life I say I’m ready to leave?”

That’s probably where the glow up starts.

2. Stop Waiting for the Costume Change

This is one of the sneakiest parts of becoming HER.

We imagine there will be a moment.

Cue the montage.

New playlist.

Hair blowing dramatically in the wind.

Suddenly you wake up and feel like the woman.

The woman who works out.

Starts the business.

Posts the video.

Leaves the relationship.

Books the trip.

Asks for more.

Gets her life together.

Finally wears the thing.

Walks into the room like she belongs there.

And then, naturally, you start making her decisions.

Except…

usually?

You wake up feeling exactly like you.

😂

Same brain.

Same fears.

Same ability to overthink a completely normal email for forty-five minutes.

And then you make a different decision anyway.

That part matters.

Because identity doesn’t always change first.

Sometimes behavior goes first and your identity has to catch up.

You don’t necessarily become confident and then act.

The psychology

Because identity doesn’t always change first. Sometimes behavior goes first and your identity has to catch up.

You act.

You survive it.

Your brain gets a receipt.

You act again.

And eventually the belief I can do this has somewhere to stand.

That tiny space between:

I don’t feel like her yet.

and

I’m doing what she would do anyway.

is where a shocking amount of becoming happens.

3. Upgrade the Standards Nobody Can Applaud

Some of the most powerful parts of your glow up will be deeply unimpressive to Instagram. 😂

Going to bed.

Checking your bank account.

Keeping the promise you made Tuesday when nobody is around to congratulate you on Friday.

Walking away from something that repeatedly drains you.

Finishing.

Cleaning up the mess instead of declaring a completely new life because you missed three days.

Taking care of your body because you live inside it, not because summer has been announced.

Creating before anybody is impressed by what you’re creating.

Doing the boring administrative thing your future life actually requires.

This is where the glow up becomes real.

Because you stop building a life optimized for being witnessed and start building one optimized for being lived.

That distinction is enormous.

Anyone can perform a new identity for a weekend.

The question is:

Who are you becoming on the random Tuesday nobody photographs?

That woman is building your life.

And eventually, the outside has no choice but to catch up.

4. Stop Letting Your Environment Cast You as the Old You

You can have incredible intentions and still live inside a system auditioning you for your old role every single day.

Your phone knows exactly how to distract you.

Your room makes the behavior you want harder.

Your calendar is basically a scrapbook of everybody else’s priorities.

Your social circle still expects the version of you who says:

I really want to do that someday.

And every time you enter the same cues, routines, conversations, and spaces, your environment quietly whispers:

This is who we are here.

So change the cues.

Put the shoes by the door.

Delete the app.

Move the desk.

Automate the transfer.

Set the boundary.

Book the appointment.

Put the thing you keep saying matters on the actual calendar.

Spend more time in rooms where the behavior you want feels normal instead of dramatic.

Your environment is always voting for a version of you.

Make sure it isn’t running a reelection campaign for someone you’ve already outgrown. 😂

Because becoming unrecognizable gets much easier when your life stops constantly reminding you to remain the same.

5. Skip the Reinvention Press Release

You do not need to announce your new era.

I know.

Devastating. 😭

No manifesto required.

No cryptic Instagram Story.

No paragraph explaining that you are entering a season of alignment.

You can just…

change.

Quietly.

Some transformations get stronger when they aren’t constantly being dragged outside for public approval.

Let yourself become without turning around every ten minutes to see who noticed.

There is something delicious about quietly building a life that would have absolutely stunned the woman you were a year ago.

And eventually, you won’t have to explain what changed.

The evidence will be everywhere.

In what you tolerate.

In what you finish.

In how quickly you recover.

In the conversations you’re finally willing to have.

In the rooms you walk into.

In what no longer impresses you.

In what no longer scares you quite as much.

In the promises you actually keep.

People may call it a glow up.

You’ll know there was a much bigger story happening underneath it.

Your Unrecognizable Era Does Not Need a 47-Step Plan

Please do not finish this article and immediately create a seventeen-tab Notion dashboard for your reinvention. 😂

Pick one thing.

One repeated decision your current life is built around.

Then ask:

What would the woman I’m becoming do differently here?

Not someday.

Not once you feel more motivated.

Not after you purchase organizational supplies.

Today.

Then do it again.

And again.

Long enough that the decision stops feeling like something you are borrowing from your future self and starts becoming part of your history.

Because that is how the unrecognizable glow up actually happens.

Not through one massive transformation.

Through enough new decisions that eventually, your old life no longer fits the woman making them.

One day, you look around and realize:

You handle things differently now.

You choose differently.

You trust yourself differently.

Things that once consumed you barely get a meeting on your calendar.

Things you used to fantasize about have become normal Tuesday afternoon problems.

And the woman who kept postponing her life?

She starts feeling less like your identity…

and more like someone you remember being.

That is the glow up nobody sees coming.

Not becoming someone else.

Becoming so practiced at being the woman you wanted to become that eventually…

she has the longer résumé. 💗
